Acne - The Basic Facts
Acne affects more than 85% of teenagers and frequently continues into adulthood.
As well as being a very uncomfortable skin condition, it can also considerably lower self esteem and confidence. The face, neck, shoulders, upper back and chest are the most common areas for acne to effect. Acne is graded 1-4 depending on the severity of it; 1 being least severe, 4 being the most severe.
It is thought that there are two main causes of acne; hormones and stress. With the onset of puberty there is an increase in the production of testosterone; sebaceous glands in the skin are sometimes very sensitive to testosterone, which can be present in both men and women. This production of testosterone can then stimulate the glands to produce more oil; at the same time dead skins cells lining the pores are not shed properly and clog up the follicles. The combination of these two effects causes a build up of oil resulting in comedones and papules.
The bacteria known as propionibacterium (P bacteria) is also linked with acne; these bacteria live on the skin usually without causing problems, but, in those skins prone to acne, the build up of oil creates an ideal environment in which these bacteria can multiply. When pores become blocked this
bacteria overfills and starts to breakdown the walls of the pore allowing the bacteria to spill into the surrounding area, leading to an acne lesion.
Those suffering with acne often visit their doctor and are subsequently prescribed antibiotics to calm the skin. However prescriptive medication for acne can often have unwanted side effects and tends to mask the symptoms as opposed to tackling the underlying cause of the problem. When the patient finishes the course of antibiotics, the acne can often return.
Treating acne with the correct products and professional treatments is highly recommended to clear the skin in the long term without the use of harsh chemicals; combined with a lifestyle change the results will be even more effective.
When dealing with all skin conditions including acne, rosacea, acne rosacea, excessive oiliness or even extreme dryness, it is always important to take into account diet, medication, water intake as well as an effective course of skincare treatments and products.
The following points should be taken into account if you or someone you know is suffering with acne
or problematic skin:
- Avoid excessive amounts of fats, sugars and carbohydrates in the diet
- Consume lots of fibre to help cleanse the system, often if you are having digestion problems this can result in breakouts across the cheek area
- Drink plenty of water – at least 8 glasses a day
- Eat as healthily as possible, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet
- Avoid doses of Vitamin B or growth supplements
- Avoid picking or squeezing any blemishes as this can lead to more breakouts and leave you with scarring
- Read the labels of the products that you are currently using on your skin; ingredients such as lanolin, isopropyl myristate, mineral oil, petroleum based products and sodium laureth sulphate are all comedogenic which means that these ingredients will block pores causing breakouts on the skin – they are still widely used in many products so look out for them.
- Stress can cause breakouts on the skin, most commonly along the jaw line
- Over drying of the skin due to alcohol in products can lead to oily/dehydrated skin.
- Alcohol will strip the skin, causing the sebaceous glands to produce more oil and resulting in excessive oiliness.
- Lack of hygiene can be another cause of acne, ensure you are washing your face regularly with a quality product, many professional acne products can also be used on the chest and back areas too if these are cause for concern
- Don’t sleep with makeup on. Remove your makeup before bedtime to prevent clogged pores and future breakouts
- Wash your cosmetic brushes and sponges at least once a week to remove oil and bacteria
- Washing your pillowcases regularly will help to control acne as germs and bacterial can often build up and cause further blemishes
- After doing any sports or gym sessions it is vital you shower straight after to remove perspiration and oil, if this is left to settle on the skin, it can block pores and cause breakouts on the chest and back areas
- Hormonal/Pre-Menstrual, often when its that time of the month many women notice the odd breakout on the chin area
In an acne or problematic skin you can expect to see the following issues; breakouts, comedones, clogged pores, sensitivity, irritability and dehydration. It is therefore vital to ensure that you are using the correct skin care products, which will be powerful enough to deal with controlling the breakouts, oiliness and blocked pores, but also gentle enough to help to calm and sooth any sensitive or irritated
areas.
Our PROVEN results driven professional treatments are designed to control acne/problematic skin conditions, preventing the spread of bacteria while simultaneously inhibiting its growth.
